Citibet Bet Types Explained
Citibet horse betting supports every wager type available at the physical track. From the simplest Win bet to complex multi-horse combinations like Trifecta and Pick 6, understanding each bet type is essential before committing real money to any race.
Every Citibet Wager Explained
- Win Bet — Pick the horse that finishes first. Highest risk, highest payout of the single-selection bet types. Most appropriate for horses with clear form advantages.
- Place Bet — Back a horse to finish in the top two or top three depending on field size. Lower payout than Win but significantly easier to collect.
- Show Bet — Your selection must finish in the top three. The safest single-horse bet type with the lowest return. Useful when a short-priced horse dominates the field.
- Exacta — Name the first two finishers in exact order. Substantially harder than a Win bet but payouts reflect that difficulty. Box Exactas cover both finishing orders.
- Quinella — Name the first two finishers in either order. More forgiving than Exacta with proportionally lower payouts. Good starting point for multi-horse wagers.
- Trifecta — Select the first three finishers in exact order. Large potential payouts in competitive fields. Combination Trifectas increase coverage at higher cost.

Choosing the Right Bet
Selecting the appropriate bet type for each race is as important as picking the right horse. Match your wager to the race conditions, field size and your confidence level.
- Small Fields, Win Bets: In fields of six or fewer runners, Win bets offer the best value. With fewer horses to contend with, selections carry higher win probability.
- Competitive Fields, Quinella: When the race looks open, a Quinella linking two likely runners gives double the finishing order coverage for manageable cost.
- Grade 1 Races, Exacta Box: Top-class races attract sharp money. Box your top two selections to cover both finishing orders and offset the competitive market.
- Long Races, Trifecta Wheel: Longer distance races produce more predictable running patterns. A Trifecta wheel around one key horse with multiple partners broadens coverage.
- Maiden Races, Place Bet: Maiden races carry maximum uncertainty. A Place bet on a well-bred debutant limits risk while still offering exposure to a potential winner.
- Know Your Bankroll: Never commit more than 3-5% of your total bankroll to any single race. Consistent unit sizing protects you through losing runs.
For most races I use the Quinella. It takes the pressure off the finishing order and I find it easier to connect on competitive fields.
Landing a Trifecta in a wide-open field is one of the best feelings in racing. The key is using combination coverage rather than straight picks.
My advice to anyone new to Citibet is to stick to Win bets for the first month. Learn how the odds work before adding complexity with multi-horse bets.
